I send a message to Sadie to let her know I’m still alive. I make myself a piece of toast and pour myself a glass of orange juice. Then I carry my bag upstairs to Will’s studio and take a shower. After, I comb my hair and leave it down. There’s no hair dryer, so I do my best to smooth it into place. It’s hot today, with clear blue skies. I brush my teeth. I put on a pale pink sundress with a short skirt, because it’s the only outfit I have that might work on the back of a motorcycle. My last-minute packing for the frontier turned out to be an epic fail. What was I thinking with sequins and a pair of high heels? I put on some light mascara and pale pink lip gloss.

I don’t bother with my glasses. I don’t actually even need them. I started wearing them when I got my job at Heights. People kept telling me how young I looked, which I started to imagine was undermining my credibility or something. I thought the glasses might make me look more sophisticated and worldly, go figure. I’m not sure if they helped or not. But the glass in them is exactly that: clear glass. It’s a little ridiculous, now that I think about it. And today, they’ll only get bugs splattered against them, probably, at top speed on the motorcycle. At the thought, my stomach curls with nerves. For more than one reason.

I pull on some leather ankle boots with a low heel, which might be a tad more practical for the ranch. Then I go downstairs and make my way out the door.

It’s not hard to find them.

I walk over to the large high-fenced pen. Jack is sitting on the fence, watching. Wyatt’s in the pen, holding a whip. Will is standing next to a very large black horse, holding its reins. There’s a saddle on its back—the Western-style one that was on his dining room table earlier.

“Come on up,” Jack says, so I climb up and sit next to him. He takes in my outfit, and my hair still damp from the shower.

“He’s going to ride it?” I ask him.

“He’s going to try to. The horse is young. He’s never been ridden. We always get Will to ride them first.”

“Why?”

“They’re calmer with him. He’s got a way with them.”

I can see that about him. That deep, grounded steadiness that was one of the first things I noticed about him. “What if it throws him off?”

“Wouldn’t be the first time. But usually they don’t.”

Will’s murmuring to the horse in a low voice, sliding his hand gently along its neck. “Put the whip down,” he says to Wyatt, calmly.

Wyatt does, moving slowly to place it on the ground and step back from it, like he’s showing the horse he’s not going to use it.

Will uses the fence to climb onto the horse. He eases himself into the saddle.

“Jesus. Isn’t he terrified?” I hear myself asking.
